What does it mean if you put your knickers on back to front? Is it a bad omen? And is it worse if you do it on Halloween? Will bad luck follow me if I change them, so they are on the right way round? To be honest, I thought it would be worse on me if I didn't, I put them on the right way round, and to hell with the consequences!
I have a smashing day ahead, making the essential pumpkin shaped biscuits, getting ready for the arrival of the loveliest almost one year old, who is coming to play, and spending the day with T, if she ever gets out of bed. I love it that costumes have already been planned. Polly the black dog is going to be a witch, and Paddy is going to be a sushi roll. Polly's costume is easy and just consists of a black scarf worn as a cape. Paddy has a cushion wrapped up in an orange Fred Perry shirt (I'm guessing it is meant to represent salmon, although I'm not certain), with a green scarf to secure it in place. It's actually a two tone shimmery orange/green chiffon scarf, but it is all L's interpretation, so who am I to question? He looks more like a tortoise to me, and then only if I squint my eyes so I can just about see. L is going to be Post Malone, and apparently all she needs for her costume is lots of elastic bands and my black eyeliner. You should google him!
Some years I have bought costumes for them, but my favourites have been the ones that they have put together themselves, although they wouldn't ever have won any prizes for them. The dead zebra, the zombie schoolgirl, the dragon ghost. Last year, T and some of her friends volunteered to take L trick or treating, and when they arrived, dressed as Mad Eye Moody and Pumpkin Jack and Morticia, they put my kids to shame. But it made me smile that this group of nearly 18 year olds were still excited to dress up and join in, and just needed the excuse of a younger zombie child bride to accompany.
Maybe I am not the only one enjoying the festivities. The other thing that surprised me this year, was that T and L both asked to go to West Lodge Farm Park (a bit of a halloween tradition in our house) to join in with the halloween activities there. I just didn't feel that we could justify going, a group of teenagers and an elderly couple. We had a great time last year, making wands, going on the haunted tractor ride and carving pumpkins and dressing up with green wigs and bowler hats.
I wish they didn't all have to grow up, but maybe next year we can recruit some younger members to come with us, we have a few little ones, recently arrived in our family who might appreciate it.
